His Master’s Voice

dogs, New York, North America, United States

Kathy in Albany, New York, sent me a postcard of Nipper on top of the old RCA building:

Nipper

This statue of Nipper weighs four tons and is the “only large Nipper in the United States.” The thing on his ear is an aircraft beacon.

Nipper was a dog who lived in the late 19th century and was the model for the painting “His Master’s Voice,” which shows Nipper listening to a gramophone. The image was adapted as the logo of many recording brands including RCA and EMI. Nipper is my favorite mascot dog, except possibly Owney the mail dog. Thanks, Kathy, for the great card!

Georgia, Kentucky, New York, North America, Ohio, United States, Utah

I wanted to get some new state view cards, so I hosted a “Show off your State” swap on swap-bot. I learned a lot of neat stuff about other states!

This first card comes from BerlinGeorgia, in, of course, Georgia:

This is her favorite Georgia postcard, and I can see why! The card shows the beautiful High Falls State Park. Gorgeous!

Next up is this view of Paria Point, in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, sent by Rattissia. I can’t really tell the scale on these peaks, but I think they are quite large and majestic.

Next we go to Kentucky, the Bluegrass State, sent by Cynthia Flowers. I love the horses in the top photo. I would love a whole postcard of those lovely Kentucky horses!

This card comes from Kris in Elmira, New York. It is very timely, as it came just a few days before Mark Twain’s birthday, which was several, several weeks ago (I’m a little behind.) Kris wants everyone to know that New York State is not like New York City, but is rather full of farming communities and hidden historical gems. The card even has a matching Mark Twain stamp:

Finally, there is this nice large-letter postcard from Ohio:

I love that Ohio’s state bird is the cardinal- such a pretty bird.

Statue of Liberty

Yesterday was the day for New Colossi:

I received this card for my UNESCO collection in the mail. It comes from New York City. I also went into the city (of Harrisburg) to get postcards for myself and picked up this card:

It also shows the Statue of Liberty! But this statue is much smaller and placed in the middle of the Susquehanna River, which runs through Harrisburg. The statue is on a small island (actually an old bridge platform) a few miles upriver from downtown. The replica is 25 feet tall and was first built in 1986, then rebuilt six years later because it was destroyed in a windstorm. The real Statue of Liberty was dedicated 100 years earlier than its miniature, in 1886. It was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1984.

New York, Connecticut, Wisconsin

Connecticut, New York, North America, United States, Wisconsin

I got three new state map cards to share today! They’re a rather odd assortment of states: New York, Connecticut, and Wisconsin.

First comes Connecticut, the “little state that could,” from Postcrosser meenie7. I love these kinds of cartoony cards that show little areas of interest. Who knew that ball bearings were a Connecticut thing?

Next is New York, also from a fellow Postcrosser, Kathy. It’s interesting how I acquired this one; Kathy just stumbled upon my profile and read that I like state map cards, so she offered to send me one from New York! We arranged a nice swap for a Pennsylvania map card, and here we are. It makes me wonder if I would have success by “cold calling” Postcrossers in my missing states who are also looking for map cards.

Finally, Wisconsin comes to me courtesy of Postcrosser skowt, who wonders when it will snow in her neck of the woods. I was wondering that too, because I was hoping for a white Christmas. There’s nothing prettier in winter than watching the snow fall silently and covering the bare tree branches.

I hope you all had a great Christmas holiday, if you celebrated, and be sure to sign up for the Boxing Day Giveaway, which ends on December 29th!

PCs in a Day No. 3

buildings, cities, Kentucky, Minnesota, New York, North America, Ohio, owls, United States

Swap-bot’s series of PCs in a Day postcard swaps always provide a wealth of new cards for my collection, since everyone sends and receives 5 postcards. These cards all arrived last week, from all across the USA:

Ruth from Minnesota wrote out this card on Halloween after a long and fun snowball fight with “ghouls, goblins, princesses, firemen, and superheros.”

Judy sends this card from Rochester, New York, where “you can wear shorts one day but need snow boots the next!”

This card comes from Kentucky and shows some of my favorite birds!

The Findlay Market in Cincinnati, Ohio, is apparently huge. The sender says she can’t wait to check it out someday!

This Alaska bear does not, unfortunately, come from Alaska, but from New York State. It is still a great picture, though!

Asia, Malaysia, New York, North America, United States

I finally received the second card from the Anything Red postcard swap. I understand why it took a while, the second card came from Malaysia!

First is this Pantone card from New York State. I like the literal interpretation of this swap! My boyfriend commented “Wow, what an awesome card!” Red is one of our favorite colors.

The second card from Malaysia:

I love it! I didn’t have any mailbox postcards yet. I love the bright red mailboxes in other countries. I do have fond memories of walking to the big blue box on the corner when I was little, but the red boxes are so charming. Of course, now it’s getting harder and harder to find a mailbox, so someday they will probably all be charming, in a nostalgic way.

Mmmm, hot wings

Received an official card from New York State yesterday:

US-1334600 from New York

It’s a recipe for Buffalo Hot Wings. Too bad it comes almost 2 years after I started a vegetarian diet! I didn’t know that the recipe was so simple. My favorite part of this card was the stamps:

So many pretty stamps! I wouldn’t consider myself a stamp collector, but I do appreciate a nice stamp.
