I didn’t get to travel to anywhere exotic during my Christmas break, but my friend Sam got to go all the way to New Zealand! I bugged him to send me a postcard, and he did! Not only did he send me my second New Zealand postcard, he sent a card showing Mount Tongariro, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is my first UNESCO card from New Zealand.
Mount Tongariro is a compound volcano on the North Island of New Zealand. It is 1,978 meters (6,490 feet) high. The mountain and its surroundings were one of the filming locations for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Sam told me that he had planned to hike on this mountain, but when the day came to do the hike, the weather was absolutely terrible — rainy, extremely windy, and just not good hiking weather. Sam asked the guide if people would actually hike the mountain in that kind of weather, and the guide replied, “Oh, yes, people still would — crazy people!!”
Here is the stamp:
I am putting this postcard up on my wall next to the other New Zealand postcard I have, which has a kiwi bird on it. Then I can see them every day! Thanks, Sam!
