Today I have two very special cards to share:
Usually I only feature cards that others have written to me. But these cards were written by me and sent to someone very special:
My grandma would have been 89 today, but she passed away in 2009, leaving behind 5 children and 11 grandchildren. She always welcomed visits from her grandchildren with fresh baked lemon meringue pie. She kept every birthday card, postcard, and school play program that I had sent her during my childhood and had them neatly packaged to come back to me when she was gone. At the bottom of the pile, there was a card I had sent her for Valentine’s Day. Underneath where I had written “I love you, Grandma” she had written, in her neat, curly handwriting (which is so much like my mother’s and so much like mine as I get older) “I love you, too, Katy.”
Happy birthday, Grandma.

Because it’s Friday and I’ve been in a crafty mood, I’m hosting a giveaway! But this isn’t just any giveaway, this one is also celebrating the opening of a new deltiolog shop! This shop will sell handmade cards and postcards, and I’m donating a portion of each sale to the World Wildlife Fund. Right now there are two kinds of sloth cards, an elephant card, a tortoise card, and a heart card in stock. So to celebrate and spread the word, I’m giving away two of the sloth notecards, one each to two lucky winners!
The first card shows a baby sloth cuddling with its mom, hanging out and eating a leaf.
The second card shows a cuddly sloth hanging from a tree branch.
Both cards will come with a white envelope. To enter to win a card, leave a comment here and tell us what your favorite animal is. Yep, more Simpsons. It’s only about 2 hours until I can watch the 500th episode. I’m excited.
This past week I got this great Simpsons ad card from dilay in Turkey:
I like the cards from the Simpsons postcard books, but I love new kinds of Simpsons cards, especially from new countries. I would love to get some Simpsons cards with non-English writing on them, like this:
Oh, oops, that’s just Ned Flanders’ English!
Finally, I have a little Simpsons project I’ve been working on to share, but it’s not postcard-related:
It’s just a little Maggie cross stitch. I’m planning to do the whole family. When I finish Maggie, I’ll start on Lisa!

I, too, will be writing, but unfortunately it’s not postcards. This weekend is the “qual,” the qualifying exam for continuing to study in my chosen field. If I pass, I will be approved to work on my bachelor’s thesis; if I don’t, I will have to revise or rewrite it, not something I wish to do! We are not supposed to be nervous about this but I am. Imagine, I am not looking forward to spending a weekend writing an 8 page paper! It is nothing I haven’t done before, but it might mean more sporadic posts (although I have some great cards to share!)
And I must remind you all that the Month of Letters Challenge has started, but there’s always time to take a pledge to write a letter each day the mail runs this month. You can see what I’m sending each day in the Month of Letters album on deltiolog’s Facebook page. And if you don’t already like us on Facebook, I encourage you to do so.

We all like receiving letters and other mail, but what about receiving a letter from the alphabet? Mary Kate McDevitt, a fellow Portlander, is embarking on a project to write and send one hand-drawn letter each day. She hopes to encourage letter writing (of the epistolary kind) and you can sign up to get one of these very lovely letters of your own, delivered right to your mailbox! Check out the project here. In the past two days I have received over a dozen postcards and 3 letters. While I’m catching up on scanning and writing about this deluge, here’s a quick, fun poll.
It seems like a great rift in the postcard community: those who want their cards in envelopes, and those who want their cards written on and stamped. There’s no wrong answers, but what do you prefer?

A nice fat stack of postcards was in my mailbox today, including this beauty:
“What a nice postcard!” I thought, “I wonder what swap this was from?” So I flipped it over to read the message, and it didn’t give a swap-name, or a username, or a postcrossing ID, and the message made no sense! And then I realized that my name isn’t Sandra… but the person this was addressed to is. And apparently I’ve been receiving so many postcards that the mailroom workers put all the postcards they receive in my box! I returned the card to the mailroom and they’ve hopefully given it to the right person now. I hope Sandra enjoys her postcard, because I think it’s beautiful!

As many of you may have heard, the postal service is in trouble, at least in the USA. Post offices are closing; delivery on Saturdays might be suspended; next thing you know, they’ll stop delivering in snow and rain (which would effectively halt mail here in Portland).
It’s hardly the internet that’s killing the post office; after all, if it weren’t for the internet, I would find it much harder to find postcard swap partners! I probably wouldn’t be sending mail at all. Mostly it’s the recession, and some poorly advised bills dictating how the postal service is run. I don’t want to get too far into it, because this is a fun blog about postcards, not politics.
